LimeWire - The Fastest File Sharing Program on the Planet
LimeWire still rules the P2P world. It is by far the most popular single P2P application, appearing on 36.4 percent of the machines surveyed as of last September. LimeWire also accounts for the overwhelming majority of Gnutella use among the top 13 of the 152 applications found on PCs. Gnutella was the protocol of choice for 40.5 percent of the PCs at the end of the period covered by the survey.

Study: LimeWire remains top P2P software; uTorrent fast-rising No. 2
LimeWire, a grizzled veteran of the peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing scene, remains the most popular software for exchanging music, video and software — much of it pirated — through the Internet, according to a study released Wednesday.
LimeWire was used on 17.8% of PCs in September last year, according to the latest Digital Media Desktop Report. Since about half of surveyed PCs have at least one peer-to-peer sharing application installed, that gives LimeWire a 36.4% share — more than three times the 11.3% share of the next-most-popular client, µTorrent.
The report is a collaboration of digital music consultancy BigChampagne, utility software provider PC Pitstop and Digital Music News. More than 100,000 Windows PCs were polled each month, with a total of 1.67 million machines polled during the 12 months.
The first version of LimeWire was released in 2000 as an alternative to the pioneering Napster MP3 sharing network. Its contemporaries, such as KaZaa, Morpheus, FastTrack, SoulSeek, Audiogalaxy and (of course) Napster, have long since faded, though Napster now operates today as a small service dealing strictly in legal downloads, and Audiogalaxy evolved into the Rhapsody subscription service.
Overseen by New York-based Lime Wire LLC, the open-source LimeWire software comes in free and professional versions. The latter costs $21.95 and runs on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.
LimeWire's ongoing dominance is surprising for a number of reasons. Two generations of college students — often characterized as the most avid file sharers — have graduated since its release. Indeed, today's college freshman would've been just 10 years old when LimeWire was first released.
Moreover, LimeWire long relied solely on the slower Gnutella network, which made it less suitable for exchanging large video files such as high-definition TV shows or movies. LimeWire only recently released an upgrade that lets users search and exchange files via BitTorrent.

What is LimeWire?
The Fastest File Sharing Program on the Planet
LimeWire is a file sharing program running on the Gnutella Network. It is open standard software running on an open protocol, free for the public to use. LimeWire allows you to share any file such as .mp3s, .avis, .jpgs, .tiffs, etc. Limewire is written in Java, and will run on Windows, Macintosh, Linux, Sun, and other computing platforms. Publish your original content to the world without setting up a website!
Why Should I Use LimeWire?
At LimeWire, we are working on developing the future of open peer networks and the digital commons. Our goal is to build users a tool that allows them to easily publish content to the world. LimeWire's elegant user interface is like no other Gnutella application available. LimeWire is capable of multiple searches, available in several different languages, and is most famous for its ease-of-use and cross platform compatibility. LimeWire offers two versions of the software: LimeWire Basic which is free of charge; the other is LimeWire PRO which costs a small fee, features faster download speeds and better search results, including up to 6 months of free updates and customer support via email. Neither version contains ads.
What's New at LimeWire?
The LimeWire Development Team is at the forefront of Gnutella Development and is working with other Gnutella Developers to enhance the power and use of the network. Several developments are being finalized, such as the ability for companies to offload bandwidth costs by serving files on LimeWire, as well as allowing personal users to send very large-sized files over email. Serving and distributing original content has never been as easy and cost-effective for individuals and businesses.

Frequently Asked Questions
Security
Q: Are there security risks associated with using LimeWire?
A: As long as you don't share your entire hard drive, you shouldn't encounter any significant security risks using Gnutella. However, make sure you are sharing only files you want to share, and to be completely safe, don't run executable programs that you obtain from the Gnutella network.
Q: Does LimeWire have spyware?
A: LimeWire 4.0 and above does not have any bundled software. None. Zero. LimeWire has no adware and no spyware of any kind.
Downloading
Q: Why do some of my search results open up a browser window when I attempt to download them?
A: Some versions of LimeWire recognize an "action" attribute of search results, which instructs LimeWire to open up a web page in a browser window rather than to download an actual file. Due to large amounts of spam on the network, this functionality has been removed as of version 4.12.3.
Q: Why do I keep getting "Need More Sources"?
A: There are several possibilities:
1. Each Gnutella user has a limited number of slots reserved for uploads. When these slots are filled, you'll see a message that LimeWire is waiting for a certain number of "busy" clients. LimeWire will automatically retry downloads from these clients after a variable period of time in hopes that upload slots will become free. However, if the person who has the file you're trying to download has too many people requesting files, he won't be able to serve any more file requests, and your connection will be refused.
2. If the person who has the file you're trying to download has recently turned off his computer or has disconnected from the Gnutella network, you will be unable to download the file.
3. If the person who has the file you're trying to download is running inferior or buggy Gnutella software, the download could fail for any number of reasons.
4. If the person who has the file you're trying to download has since deleted the file or moved it, you may encounter problems downloading the file.
To minimize the chances of failed downloads, make your search more specific. You will have more pertinent search results from which to choose a download.
Viruses
Use and update your anti-virus software regularly. Files you download could be mislabeled, hiding a virus or other unwanted content. Use anti-virus software to protect your computer from viruses you might pick up from other users through the file-sharing program. Although your virus filter should prevent your computer from receiving possibly destructive files, computer security experts suggest you avoid files with extensions like .exe, .scr, .lnk, .bat, .vbs, .dll, .bin, and .cmd.
LimeWire's Response
Please be very careful when downloading files with a .exe suffix, since these files can contain a virus or spyware. For security reasons, LimeWire will not download VBS files. LimeWire's Library will not launch .exe, .vbs, .lnk, .bat, .sys, or .com files, although such files can be launched with a program outside of LimeWire. We do recommend the use some sort of virus-protection software to scan any files that are downloaded.
Spyware
Be aware of spyware. Some file-sharing programs install other software known as spyware. Spyware monitors a user's browsing habits and then sends that data to third parties. Sometimes the user gets ads based on the information that the spyware has collected and disseminated. Spyware can be difficult to detect and remove. Before you use any file-sharing program, you may want to buy software that can prevent the downloading of spyware or help detect it on your hard drive.
LimeWire's Response
LimeWire has absolutely no spyware or adware. Zero. None. LimeWire do not bundle any other software with LimeWire.
